Privacy policy.

Domovoi is a home for two: Catered (dinners and the shopping list), Curated (what to watch) and Considered (gifts). This page explains what we collect when you use domovoi.ca, why, who else touches it, and what you can do about it. It's written to be read, not skimmed past.

2.1 Without an account

Every tool works without signing up. If you use one signed out, what you add (recipes, swipes, your anniversary list and so on) stays in your browser's local storage on your device. It isn't sent to us.

2.2 Your account

When you make a home we collect your email address, your first name, how you sign in (email and password, an emailed link, or Google), and whether you'd like product emails. If you fill in "Your week" we also keep your working hours, office days and commute, which we use to suggest how much time you have for dinner.

2.3 What you add

The people in your gift calendar haven't signed up to Domovoi themselves, so please only add what you need to remember a gift. We only ever show those details to you and your partner.

If you paste a link to a product, our server visits that page once to read its name, picture, price and shop, so you don't have to type them. We keep those details and the link with your gift idea; we don't keep a copy of the page, and the shop sees a visit from our server, not from you. We show the product picture straight from the shop's website.

2.4 What's collected automatically

Our hosting and database providers keep standard server logs (IP address, browser, pages requested, errors) for security and to keep things running. We keep a log of what each of you changes in your home, so we can tell the other one; it's visible only inside your home. We use Google Analytics, through Google Tag Manager, to see how people find and use the site (section 6).

3. How we use it

To run the tools for you and your partner: syncing your plan and lists, matching your shows, putting birthdays on your calendar, and showing each of you what the other changed. To keep the service secure and fix problems. To send you product emails, only if you've said yes. To understand, in aggregate, which parts of the site are useful. We don't use your data for advertising and we don't build profiles to sell.

4. Sharing inside your home

Domovoi is built for two. When you join a home, what you add is visible to the other person in it, and both of you can change it. The exception is gifts: anything recorded as a gift or budget for one of you is hidden from that person, enforced in our database rather than just on screen. If you leave a home or want something separated, email us (section 10).

5. Google sign-in and Google Calendar

If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and Google account ID, and use them only to create your Domovoi account and sign you in.

If you choose to import birthdays from Google Calendar, we ask for read-only access to your list of calendars and their events. We read the next 12 months of events once, in your browser, so you can choose which calendars, people and dates to add to your gift calendar. Public holiday calendars are skipped. Only the people and dates you confirm are saved to Domovoi. We don't store your Google access token, we don't keep a copy of your calendar, we never write to it, and we don't read it again unless you start another import. You can remove Domovoi's access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.

Domovoi's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We don't use Google user data for advertising, we don't sell it, we don't let people read it, and we don't use it to train AI or machine-learning models.

6. Who else handles your data

We use a small number of providers to run Domovoi. They process data for us, not for themselves:

When you save a recipe from a link, we fetch that page to read the recipe. When you open a maker in Considered, you go to their own website, which has its own policy. Some of these providers are outside Canada, so your data may be processed in other countries, including the United States.

7. Cookies and storage

We use your browser's local storage to keep you signed in, remember your settings (like your sort order or which anniversary list you follow) and hold anything you add while signed out. Google Analytics uses cookies as described above. We don't use advertising cookies.

8. How long we keep it

We keep your account and household data while your account is open. The activity log behind notifications is shown for 30 days. If you ask us to delete your account we remove your personal data within 30 days, except anything we're legally required to keep. Because a home is shared, deleting your account doesn't delete what your partner added; we'll talk through anything you share before we remove it.

9. Keeping it safe

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest with our providers. Access is controlled per home in the database itself, so one home can never read another's. No system is perfect; if something goes wrong that affects you, we'll tell you promptly.

10. Your choices and rights

You can see and change most of your data in Domovoi itself, and change your name, week and email preferences on your account page. You can also ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing hi@domovoi.ca. We'll reply within 30 days. If you're not happy with how we've handled your data, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

11. Children

Domovoi is for adults running a home. It isn't meant for anyone under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

12. Changes

We'll update this page as Domovoi changes, and change the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
